Self-Imposed Training
After leaving Kent State University, Nick trains intensely to join the University of South Florida team. He runs at night, eats enormous quantities, and builds himself into a walk-on.
The effort proves his capacity for discipline.
Eligibility Loss
The NCAA transfer rule prevents him from playing. His decision to quit football leaves a lasting sense of regret that resurfaces in the Gulf.
Fitness as Equipment

Muscles Against the Sea
Endurance in Action
Nick uses calisthenics, flexing, and constant repositioning to keep blood moving. His training lets him pull people back and continue climbing onto the hull.
The body becomes a tool for survival.
Limits of Strength
Fitness cannot prevent hypothermia, dehydration, or grief. It only extends the interval before those forces become decisive.
Rebuilding the Body

Recovery Through Training
Physical Atrophy
Nick leaves the hospital thirty pounds lighter and barely able to lift familiar weights. His legs, hip, groin, and skin remain damaged.
The former trainer must accept slow progress rather than command immediate results.
A Changed Relationship
Exercise again becomes his main coping mechanism, but it no longer carries the same joy or intensity as training with Marquis and Corey.
